September 17, 2018

Results are in for one of the largest ever clinical trials to test the effectiveness of aspirin in prevention of cardiovascular disease in health elderly people.

The use of low-dose aspirin as a primary prevention strategy in older adults resulted in a significantly higher risk of major bleeding and did not result in a significantly lower risk of cardiovascular disease than placebo. (Funded by the National Institute on Ageing and others; ASPREE ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT01038583.)

The results have just been published in the New England Journal of Medicine
